Ukrainian Olympian Oleksandr Pielieshenko was killed in the war with Russia

Ukrainian Olympic weightlifter Oleksandr Pielieschenko died at the age of 30 while serving on the front lines of the ongoing Russia-Ukraine War, the Ukrainian Olympic Committee announced Monday (May 6) via ESPN.

The committee said in a post shared on Telegram on Sunday (May 5) that Pielieshenko “died in war with the enemy,” adding that he served in the armed forces in the early days of the Russian invasion, which originally began in February 2022 of the country. The Stanytsia Luhanska native represented Ukraine at the 2016 Rio Games, placing fourth in the men’s 85kg category, missing the medal spots by five kilograms, and winning gold at the European Weightlifting Championships in 2016 and 2017, but was eliminated after his banned from sport for second doping violation in 2018.

“It is with great sadness that we announce that today the heart of the honored Master of Sports of Ukraine, two-time European weightlifting champion Oleksandr Pielieshenko, stopped beating,” the Ukrainian Weightlifting Federation said via ESPN.

“War demands the best of us. This is a very heavy loss for the entire weightlifting community of Ukraine. “Heroes don’t die,” said the Ukrainian national weightlifting coach Viktor Slobodianiuk added.
