According to authorities, an Atmore man was arrested on May 29 on drug charges and tampering with evidence.

Atmore Police Department spokesman Sergeant Darrell McMann said in a press release that 35-year-old Brent Simpson was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled substance, tampering with evidence, resisting arrest and public intoxication.

McMann said that on the day of the arrest, at around 8:15 p.m., an APD officer observed several minibikes riding recklessly and without lights on Martin Luther King Avenue.

“As the officer approached the group of minibikes, the group fled the area,” McMann said. “One of the minibikes, driven by Brent Simpson, 35, of Atmore, was disabled. The officer contacted Simpson as he was pushing the minibike off the road.”

McMann said that while speaking to Simpson, the officer noticed that he was speaking slurred and smelled strongly of alcohol.

“Simpson began to pull items out of his pockets and attempted to casually throw them a few feet away,” he said. “As the officer attempted to detain Simpson, he began to pull away from him. After a brief struggle, Simpson was handcuffed.”

McMann said the items Simpson intended to throw away were seized: a small amount of a white rock substance that field tested positive for crack cocaine, a THC vaporizer and a small amount of synthetic marijuana (spice).

Simpson was subsequently taken to the Escambia County Detention Center in Brewton.
