One person died and three others were injured in an accident on the Gold Star Bridge

A woman was killed and three others injured when a Brink’s truck collided with a broken-down SUV on the Gold Star Bridge on Interstate 95 South in Groton Friday evening.

According to Connecticut State Police, a Ford Edge was traveling south on I-95, just south of the Gold Star Bridge Exit 83 ramp, around 6:42 p.m. Friday when it experienced a “mechanical failure.”

As the Ford came to a stop in the southbound lane, a Brink’s Freightliner armored truck drove into the rear of the SUV, state police said.

The Ford driver, a 52-year-old man, and the passenger, a 54-year-old woman, were taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London for suspected minor injuries, according to state police. The backseat passenger, identified as 76-year-old Evelyn Diment, was seriously injured and taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, state police said. All three lived in Winamac, Indiana.

The driver of Brink’s truck, a 37-year-old woman from New London, was also taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital with minor injuries, according to state police.

The accident is still under investigation, state police said.
