Parents of surfers killed in Mexico remember their sons – NBC 7 San Diego

In the days since their sons Callum and Jake were murdered during a surfing trip to Mexico, Debra and Martin Robinson have struggled with a tidal wave of grief.

“Our hearts are broken and the world has become a darker place for us,” said Debra Robinson.

The men and their friend, Carter Rhoad, went missing in late April. According to Mexican authorities, their bodies were found in a well with gunshot wounds to the head. Authorities believe they were killed by thieves who wanted to steal their truck’s tires.

Callum Robinson lived in Ocean Beach, although the brothers are from Australia. Rhoad lived in Point Loma. The Robinsons said the U.S. has become Callum’s second home and the Ocean Beach community appears to have embraced the professional lacrosse player.

“Callum was a lovely, larger-than-life character,” his mother said.

NBC 7’s Allison Ash takes a look at how her violent death sparked protests in Baja.

Robinson said Callum played for Australia in the World Cup and always took the time to coach young lacrosse players.

Jake, meanwhile, pursued a career in medicine. His family said he loved running, swimming and attending live music festivals and concerts.

“Jake was a happy, gentle and compassionate soul,” Robinson said.

Carter Rhoad played football at Point Loma Nazarene. His former coach said: “His love for life was infectious and he brought love and hope to everyone he knew.” He had recently agreed to join the team as a volunteer coach.

The young men shared a passion for surfing.

“Now it’s time to bring them home to family and friends and to the ocean waves of Australia,” Robinson said, adding a plea to the community her sons have built across borders and oceans. “Please live bigger, shine brighter and love stronger in your life.” Reminder.”

It has been a very difficult week for the family and friends of Carter Rhoad and Jake and Callum Robinson. NBC 7’s Jeanette Quezada has more.

Mexican authorities say the three bodies found are most likely those of the missing surfers, and at least one man is in custody over their deaths. NBC 7’s Dana Williams reported May 5, 2024.
