Olath daycare license suspended due to litter and safety concerns

OLATHE, Kan. (KCTV) – Safety concerns are prompting the Kansas Department of Health to suspend the operating license of an Olathe daycare center.

The emergency order provided by the state shows the Charlotte P Kauffman Day Care Home near W. 151st and S. Mullen St. in Olathe failed a compliance inspection on April 22. The state suspended the facility’s license on May 7.

The findings, posted on the Kansas Department of Health’s website, show that a state employee identified a number of problems that could pose a fire hazard and other problems at the home day care center.

One of the most commonly documented issues in the report concerned the amount of trash in the home. According to the report, several garbage bags on the second floor blocked access to the third floor of the home.

The report also mentioned an unclean kitchen with lots of trash in the room. There were at least nine trash bags in the middle of the kitchen floor. According to the inspection, the refrigerator and freezer had dried food residue, debris, dead mosquitoes and an odor. Additionally, the inspector found that the facility had an infestation of fruit flies and that there was no clean sanitary area in the kitchen for food preparation.

Another concern for the inspector appeared to be the clutter and piles of household items, toys and food found in other rooms.

According to the report, the playground did not meet state requirements due to the large amount of disorder. Toys were also stored in deep storage tubs that were difficult for children to access.

The daycare also allegedly told the state inspector that it was out of milk on the day of the visit.

Further concerns that led to the immediate suspension of the daycare license were that not all children in the daycare had medical certificates and proof of vaccinations.

The Charlotte P. Kauffman Day Care Home is required to notify the parents and guardians of the children in its care that the state has suspended its operating license.

The daycare center owner can appeal the decision.

Online records show Charlotte P Kauffman Day Care Home has been licensed since at least May 2021.
