According to Hickory Police Department, police officer and armed suspect were shot in bar

A police officer and an armed suspect were shot at a bar on Sunday, Hickory police said in a news release.

Around 2 a.m. Sunday, officers responded to multiple gunshots in the area of ​​The Gateway Pub & Grill, located on Highway 70 Southwest in Hickory.

At the scene, officers found an armed suspect and attempted to arrest him. While they attempted to arrest him, a second armed suspect began firing at officers, police said.

One officer was shot twice. A supporting officer returned fire, hitting one of the armed suspects, police said. They did not say which of the suspects was shot.

The officer who was shot was taken to a local hospital. Hickory police said he is expected to recover from his injuries soon.

The shot suspect was flown to a hospital in Charlotte, where he remains in critical condition.

Channel 9’s Dave Faherty was there Sunday morning and could see officers investigating in the parking lot. Dozens of pieces of evidence had been laid out.

Customers told Faherty that dozens of people were in the bar toward the end of closing time when someone started firing a gun in the parking lot.

The North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is investigating the shooting, and the police officer who shot the suspect has been placed on leave pending the outcome.

Hickory police are investigating the first shooting at the bar.
