Teen pointed airsoft gun at driver in road rage incident in Randolph County, officials say

RANDOLPH COUNTY, NC (WGHP) — While driving through traffic on U.S. 64 near Faith Rock Road Thursday morning, a driver said he saw someone behind him driving aggressively.

“I looked in my rearview mirror and saw a blue Toyota Tundra truck weaving back and forth between lanes rather recklessly. When it got next to me, it passed me and forced me off the road,” said the anonymous driver.

The man said he increased his speed so he could get a closer look at the driver. Then the situation escalated.

“I honked and the driver rolled down the window, pulled out a gun and waved it in front of me,” the driver said.

The Randolph County Sheriff’s Office later confirmed it was an airsoft gun, but at the time it was difficult to tell the difference.

The witness then slammed on the brakes, took a photo of the driver’s license plate and called police. Thanks to the man’s information, the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office had some leads to track down the truck.

Officers began searching. Eventually, the Eastern Randolph High School security officer located the suspicious vehicle on school property and stopped it.

According to investigators, the driver of the truck was a minor. They also found an airsoft gun in the truck.

The witness said he was relieved that investigators were able to find the suspect and had the following message for motorists.

“Just get out of the way. If you see them coming, get out of the way. Some of these people are a little out of control, so don’t mess with them,” the driver said.

According to the Randolph County Sheriff’s Office, after the airsoft gun was found, the case was referred to Child Protective Services and charged with assault by displaying a firearm and other weapons on school property.
