Eight dead in stabbing in central China: state media

A man killed eight people and injured another with a knife in central China, state media reported on Friday, citing local authorities.

The knife attack occurred on Thursday morning in the city of Xiaogan in Hubei province, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

The 53-year-old attacker, surnamed Lu, had previously been receiving treatment for a mental illness, it said.

The injured person’s injuries were not life-threatening, according to the state news agency Xinhua.

Mass crimes involving violence are relatively rare in China, as the possession of firearms is strictly prohibited. Nevertheless, there have been numerous stabbings in recent years.

On Monday, a woman with a fruit knife killed two people and injured four others at an elementary school in central Jiangxi province.

Also this month, two people were killed and 21 injured after a man stabbed someone in a hospital in southwest China’s Yunnan province.
