8-year-old girl shot multiple times in Gate City

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – Birmingham police are investigating after an 8-year-old girl was reportedly shot at least twice in the Gate City neighborhood Sunday night.

Around 9 p.m., police were called to the area of ​​the 6700 block of Joppa Avenue to investigate several shots fired alerts received by the Real Time Crime Center.

According to their initial reports, more than 70 shots were fired in the area surrounding this location.

While police were en route to Gate City, they received word that an 8-year-old girl was being taken to Birmingham Fire Station 12 in the 6400 block of 1st Avenue North. She suffered at least two gunshot wounds and was taken by Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service to an area hospital for treatment.

According to police, she was shot at least twice, perhaps three times. Initial reports from the hospital suggest she is confident she will survive her injuries.

BPD’s preliminary investigation determined that a shooting occurred in the Gate City neighborhood. They believe that around 60 to 70 people gathered to celebrate Mother’s Day in the neighborhood. We’re told they believe there are two suspects who fired these 70+ shots in the area.

According to Officer Truman Fitzgerald at the scene, police believe the girl and a parent were traveling in a car in the area during the shooting and she was struck while driving in that car.

Nobody is in custody.
