Columbus Police Kill Suspected Amazon Shooter; Officer in vest shot dead

A gunman who opened fire at an Amazon warehouse in West JeffersoN was killed by Columbus police after the man shot an officer on the West Side Sunday night.

The officer was shot while wearing his bulletproof vest and was not seriously injured, police union leaders said. It was the second fatal shooting by a Columbus officer in less than 24 hours, with an officer also being shot Saturday evening in Euclid, a suburb near Cleveland.

No injuries were reported at the Amazon facility.

West Jefferson police confirmed that the suspect was an Amazon employee and that a gunshot caused damage to a building at the warehouse around 4:45 p.m

Brian Steel, president of the Fraternal Order of Police Capital City Lodge No. 9, told The Dispatch that Madison County officers in an unmarked vehicle pursued the suspect’s car as he fled into Columbus and radioed for help. Multiple agencies in the area responded.

The man shot at the officers as they tried to stop the vehicle. Officers returned fire, Steel said.

The shooting occurred around 6:15 p.m. near the busy intersection of Georgesville and Clime roads, east of the outer belt of I-270.

Steel said the vest likely saved the officer’s life. He was expected to be released from the hospital within hours.

“You always have to be vigilant, but when something like this happens and what happened in Euclid, you are especially vigilant,” Steel said. “It’s definitely in the back of officers’ minds.”

The Madison County Sheriff’s Office said in a post on its Facebook page that officers received a call about a possible active shooter at the warehouse west of West Jefferson. The Sheriff’s Office and West Jefferson Police Department responded and are investigating.

The incident began when the suspect reportedly fired shots inside the Amazon warehouse.

On Saturday evening, Columbus police fatally shot a man who police said fired at them with a rifle while officers responded to a domestic dispute. Officers later found a woman who died after apparently being shot by the man before officers arrived.

Both police shootings in Columbus are being investigated by the Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation in accordance with department policy. After the investigation is complete, it will be reviewed by the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Office and presented to a grand jury. This is this agency’s policy for all fatal shootings involving police.
