Largo Police Department introduces K-9 therapy for employees and victims for the first time

LARGO, Fla. (WFLA) – The Largo Police Department welcomed its first therapy dog, K9 Pension.

The guesthouse will provide comfort and emotional support to department employees and reduce anxiety among crime victims.

The 1-year-old is a rescue dog who received training at Paws and Stripes College, a Brevard County Sheriff’s Office obedience program that helps save the lives of local shelter dogs.

Largo Police Sergeant Sequeira, Pension’s handler, completed 40 hours of training with him as part of the program before bringing him home to the department.

“Our officers are exposed to psychological stress and stressful situations that can negatively impact their mental health,” said Police Chief Mike Loux. “Research shows that therapy dogs can have a positive impact on reducing stress, anxiety and depression, as well as promoting overall well-being.”

The department said K9 Pension is sponsored by the nonprofit organization Speak Up, Let’s Talk about Mental Health, Inc., which works to break the stigma of mental illness by providing mental health education and suicide prevention.

“By adding a therapy dog ​​to our department, officers, dispatchers and all staff will gain a source of comfort and support, promoting a more resilient and healthy workforce,” Loux added.
