(ACCIDENT) C8 Corvette driver freed after hitting rear of semi-trailer

The elderly driver of an Amplify Orange C8 Corvette coupe had to be pulled from his car by emergency responders after he crashed into the back of a semi-truck on a California highway Thursday morning.

Officer Josh Greengard, spokesman for the California Highway Patrol Newhall Area Office, said the accident occurred around noon on the northbound side of the 5 Freeway near Hasley Canyon Road in Castaic.

β€œThe initial call indicated it was a speeding car with multiple missed accidents,” Greengard said.

The rescue was broadcast live on Los Angeles television stations Thursday afternoon. Aerial footage from the scene showed several firefighters working tirelessly to free the 77-year-old driver of the Corvette, whose front half was trapped under the rear of the big rig trailer. The accident apparently occurred on the side of the road.

The rescue took about 30 minutes and the driver was then taken to hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown at this time, but KCAL News positively reported that he gestured toward firefighters with his heavily bandaged left arm during the rescue.

The driver of the big rig did not appear to be injured in the accident, and his truck appeared to have sustained minimal damage.

Authorities said northbound lanes No. 2, 3 and 4 were closed for at least an hour after the crash, causing traffic delays in the area.
