Death of Augusta toddler investigated after bathtub incident

Two-year-old boy Augusta has died two days after he was reportedly found in a bathtub.

Rayshon Roberts died late Friday at Wellstar MCH Health, according to a news release Monday from coroner Mark Bowen. An autopsy has been scheduled.

“(Rayshon) was transported to the hospital on 07/24/2024 after he was reportedly found unconscious in a bathtub,” the coroner said in an email.

While the child lived on Fayeteville Drive, the incident occurred at a residence on Cross Tree Court. Before the death, authorities charged 20-year-old Danashia McClennon with first-degree child abuse.

According to the arrest warrant, McClennon allegedly left the two-year-old boy alone in a bathtub when he hit his head and fell face first into the water. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition with internal injuries and difficulty breathing and eventually died on Friday at 11:36 p.m.

Adding to the mystery is a sheriff’s report that states that when a firefighter arrived at the home, he found a woman attempting to resuscitate the child. The woman claimed she had left the child unattended in the bathtub and when she returned, she found him face down in the water. However, according to media reports, the child’s diaper was dry.

At the hospital, the child’s mother told authorities that she had left the child in the care of a woman before she was asked to come to the hospital following an accident.

A GoFundMe page set up by Deana Roberts described the child as a “lucky little boy.”

“Unfortunately, I have to say I need help with his funeral and burial plans. Anything helps,” the GoFundMe page says.

McClennon remained without bail at the Charles B. Webster Detention Center on Monday.
