Tybee Island family loses dog in tragic accident, authorities say

TYBEE ISLAND, Georgia (WSAV) – The Tybee Island Police Department (TIPD) reports that a family dog was killed in an accident involving children who had no intention or intent to harm their beloved pet.

According to authorities, a man called 911 shortly after 1:30 p.m. Saturday to obtain emergency medical assistance for the family dog.

Tybee Island police and firefighters arrived at the scene but were ultimately unable to save the animal’s life.

During the investigation, authorities learned that earlier that day, two children had left their vacation home to retrieve personal items from a car parked in the driveway.

According to TIPPD, the family’s small dog had followed the children outside without their knowledge and jumped into the car before they closed the door. Unfortunately, when they left, the dog was trapped in the car.

Authorities say the children’s father noticed some time later that the dog was nowhere to be found and began searching. When the dog was finally found, he was in the midst of a medical crisis, prompting the family to call for help.

The TIPD said in a Facebook statement on Sunday: “Our condolences go out to the family and anyone potentially affected who is trying to put this incident behind them.”
