Cause of death of Treat Williams announced: Driver of fatal accident charged

The man who was driving the car in the accident that killed actor Treat Williams has been formally charged nearly two months after Williams’ death.

Ryan Koss was charged with “gross negligence causing death” for his role in the crash, according to Vermont State Police. Koss was riding his Honda Element on June 12 when he veered into the path of Williams’ motorcycle and collided with it, according to the police report. Williams suffered life-threatening injuries in the crash and died later that day. The medical examiner listed the official cause of death as “severe injuries and blood loss as a result of the crash.”

Koss voluntarily turned himself in to authorities on Tuesday, was investigated and released. His arraignment is scheduled for September. (Our sister site Deadline first reported the news.)

Williams’ family released a statement at the time of his death: “As you can imagine, we are shocked and deeply saddened at this time. Treat loved his family, his life and his craft very much and was truly at the peak of his career during all of this. It is all so shocking right now, but please know that Treat was dearly and deeply loved and respected by his family and everyone who knew him. We are deeply devastated and ask that you respect our privacy as we deal with our grief. To all of his fans, please know that Treat appreciated all of you and continue to keep him in your hearts and prayers.”
