1 dead after two-vehicle crash in North Sioux City

UNION COUNTY, SD (KCAU) — A fatal two-vehicle crash occurred in North Sioux City Friday afternoon, leaving one person dead and another injured.

According to the South Dakota Department of Public Safety, on July 26 at approximately 1:47 p.m., a 69-year-old man was driving a 2020 Ford Escape north on I-29. At mile marker 2, within the city limits of North Sioux City, he was reportedly rear-ended by traffic due to construction.

Another man, 57, was driving a 2013 Lexus RX 350 at highway speeds northbound on I-29 when he reportedly struck the rear of the Escape. A preliminary investigation indicates the Escape then entered the median and overturned while the Lexus crossed the southbound lane and struck a fence in a ditch.

Both men were taken to a local hospital. The driver of the Escape died, while the driver of the Lexus suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

The driver of the Escape was wearing a seatbelt, but the driver of the Lexus was not, officials say.

No names of the victims have been released yet.

The South Dakota Highway Patrol is still investigating the incident.
