Chelsea complete signing of Caleb Wiley from Atlanta United

Chelsea have completed the signing of Caleb Wiley from Atlanta United.

The 19-year-old has signed a six-year contract with the option of a further 12 months. The Athletic It had previously been reported that Chelsea were set to pay a fee of around £8.5 million ($10.9 million) to their MLS counterparts, with Wiley set to be loaned to Strasbourg – the French top-flight side also controlled by Chelsea’s owners BlueCo – for the 2024-25 season.

Wiley is currently part of the U.S. Olympic team as it prepares to face host France in the men’s tournament opener on Wednesday, followed by games against Guinea and New Zealand.

The left-back has been capped twice by the United States senior team and five times by the Under-23s.

“Caleb embodies the path we envisioned when we launched this club,” said Carlos Bocanegra, Atlanta’s Vice President and Technical Director. “Born and raised in Atlanta, he joined our Academy at age 11, played for ATL UTD 2 and continued to achieve every milestone in his journey until signing as a Homegrown Player.

“During this time, he made his debut with the United States Men’s National Team and was selected to represent our country at the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. He can now continue his career with a major European club. We wish Caleb the best in this new challenge of his career and look forward to following his journey.”

Wiley is Atlanta’s latest high-profile sale of the transfer window, after Thiago Almada joined Brazilian side Botafogo in an MLS-record deal and Georgios Giakoumakis was sold to Mexican club Cruz Azul.

Chelsea have already been active in the window, with Wiley joining Tosin Adarabioyo, Marc Guiu, Renato Viega, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Omari Kellyman as summer arrivals.
