Houston Texans sign veteran running back Cam Akers

After three days of practice, the Houston Texans decided to add more competition to their running back attack. On Sunday afternoon, the Texans signed veteran running back Cam Akers, as reported by KPRC’s Aaron Wilson.

Akers’ acquisition comes a day after the former Florida State University prospect spent Saturday morning practicing with the franchise during their third day of camp.

With Akers’ arrival, the Texans have a handful of players to round out their offense. Joe Mixon and Dameon Pierce have taken the helm as Houston’s top two backs. However, Akers will have to compete with the likes of Dare Ogunbowale, British Brooks and Jawhar Jordan.

“I think the main goal here is to win,” offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik said. “Ultimately, everybody’s goal is to win. And I think when you have the right players and the right team that are really committed to doing that, you’re going to be able to feed everybody.”

“Everybody’s going to have the ball, everybody’s going to have their stats, everybody – really, all we want to do is win. And no matter what, every week, I think I said this in the offseason, we’re really in a position to do whatever we need to do to win that week. And that’s all we can ask for as players, as coaches.”

Akers began his career as a second-round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft by the Los Angeles Rams. He spent four seasons with the franchise before being traded to the Minnesota Vikings in September. The 25-year-old running back has suffered two torn Achilles tendons. His last one came in the Vikings’ Week 9 game against the Atlanta Falcons in November.
