Croatian police on Sunday arrested a man suspected of setting a fire that burned down eight hectares of forest near the popular coastal resort of Trogir this week.

According to police, the 35-year-old suspect started the fire in two places with a lighter.

Dozens of firefighters and three firefighting planes fought the fire that broke out late Thursday in the village of Seget Donji and engulfed a large forest area near a tourist campsite, holiday apartments and a hotel.

The firefighters managed to prevent the fire from spreading to residential buildings and a hotel complex.

Croatia, like the rest of the Balkans, has been hit by a persistent heatwave since the beginning of the month, with temperatures exceeding 37 degrees Celsius (98.6 degrees Fahrenheit).

Croatia is visited by millions of tourists every year, mainly because of its stunning coastline with over 1,000 islands and islets.
