A suspect who shot at Portland police without injuring the officers has died from a gunshot wound.

On Wednesday, July 10, 2024, at 3:42 p.m., two Portland Police Officers assigned to the Traffic Division conducted a traffic stop on a driver near Southeast 92nd Avenue and Southeast Taylor Street. The driver, an adult male, escaped from control. Officers did not pursue him, but did check the area.

As officers drove to Southeast 88th Avenue between Southeast Taylor Street and Southeast Main Street, they saw the suspect’s vehicle parked and the suspect standing in front of it. They confronted the suspect. The suspect turned and ran while firing at the officers. The officers did not fire. They radioed for additional police while they coordinated a perimeter to contain the suspect.

The suspect shot another victim who drove past him as he attempted to flee. The adult female driver was unharmed. The suspect ran into Berrydale Park at 9004 Southeast Taylor Street. There, as officers surrounded the park, the suspect shot himself. He was taken to the hospital by ambulance and later died.

No officers or community members were injured.

Due to the use of deadly force against police officers, detectives from the Homicide and Major Crimes Division arrived at the scene and are investigating.

Investigators believe there is additional video evidence captured by residential surveillance systems in the area. Residents between Southeast 86th Avenue and Southeast 92nd Avenue between Southeast Taylor Street and Southeast Main Street are asked to review their video recordings between 3:40 p.m. and 3:47 p.m. to determine if any evidentiary footage was captured.

If anyone has video footage, evidence, or witness statements and has not yet spoken to police, please contact Detective Ryan Foote at [email protected], (503) 823-0781 or Detective Travis Law at [email protected], (503) 823-0395. Please reference case number 24-171766.

“This incident demonstrates that there is no such thing as routine stops or routine operations,” said Police Chief Bob Day. “While I mourn the loss of life, I am relieved to know that neither the officers were physically injured nor were any of the community members who were in proximity to the suspect when he decided to shoot in a residential area.”
