Warsaw police search for driver who fled after fatal accident with overturned Jeep

WARSAW, Ind. (WANE) – Officials in Warsaw are searching for a driver who fled the scene of a crash early Tuesday morning that caused a Jeep to flip onto its roof and kill the woman inside.

According to Warsaw Police, officers and other first responders were dispatched to a crash at the corner of Detroit Street and Winona Avenue shortly after 3:15 a.m.

Authorities found a 2021 Jeep rolled over on its roof on Winona Avenue. A 2006 Subaru B9 Tribeca was found near Jefferson Street with significant damage to the driver’s side.

The woman who was driving the Jeep was pronounced dead at the scene by the Kosciusko County Coroner. Police said the Jeep’s license plate number was in a Canadian province; the woman’s identity will not be released until family is notified.

Police found that the driver of the Subaru had fled the scene of the accident before they arrived.

Police said that while there were no known witnesses to the accident, the initial investigation indicated that the Jeep was traveling south on State Road 15 – which leads to Winona Avenue – and struck the northbound Subaru.

The Warsaw Police Criminal Investigation Division is currently attempting to identify the driver who fled the scene of the accident, which could lead to serious felony charges. Anyone with information or surveillance video that could assist in the investigation is asked to call (574) 385-2206.

SR 15 was closed between Market Street and Winona Avenue for about two hours.

In addition to the Warsaw Police Department, multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office, FACT, Winona Lake Police Department, Mentone Police Department, Warsaw-Wayne Fire District, Lutheran EMS, Kosciusko County Coroner’s Office and the Kosciusko County District Attorney’s Office.
