Person shot after allegedly firing at police officer in Newton, police say – WSOC TV

NEWTON, NC — Newton police say a person was shot after allegedly firing multiple shots at police officers late Monday night.

Police said they received a 911 call at the Catawba Pines Apartments on East 1st Street shortly after 11:30 p.m.

At the scene, police encountered a group of people in the parking lot of the complex. While officers attempted to determine who had called 911 before hanging up, they made contact with a man holding a gun.

Police said the man then fired several shots at them after they ordered him to drop the weapon. A brief standoff ensued before officers returned fire, hitting the man.

The man was then taken to Catawba Valley Medical Center and then flown by helicopter to Atrium Health Medical Center in Charlotte. His condition is critical, according to police.

Newton police said the officers and deputies involved in the incident have been placed on leave. The investigation into the officer-involved shooting is being conducted by the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigations.
