Steelers DB Cam Sutton suspended for nearly half the season, Browns still have to play twice

The Pittsburgh Steelers will be without one of their best defensive backs at the start of the 2024 NFL season. The news that CB Cameron Sutton It was no surprise that Sutton would be suspended, as Sutton was released by the Detroit Lions in the offseason over a domestic violence charge.

According to several reports, Sutton escaped police after a warrant was issued for his arrest. The statement from the Tampa, Florida Sheriff’s Office provided some details:

“After weeks of evading law enforcement, this man finally made the right decision and turned himself in,” said Hillsborough County Sheriff Chad Chronister. “Domestic violence has no place in our community, and no one is above the law here in Hillsborough County. My thoughts are with this woman as she continues to recover from this man’s cruel actions.”

The specific allegation is disturbing:

Sutton was wanted for domestic violence by strangulation, a third-degree felony punishable by up to five years in prison.

Sutton will miss the first eight games of the season after the NFL completes its investigation:

According to ESPN, Sutton entered a pre-trial diversion program in April to “resolve his domestic violence case.”

Earlier this offseason, the Cleveland Browns released DE Lonnie Phelps after he was arrested and charged with drunk driving causing property damage or personal injury.

With Pittsburgh’s schedule packed with AFC North games toward the end of the year, Sutton will not miss a divisional game and will be able to return to the team during the off week. The Browns will face Sutton in Weeks 12 and 14.

Sutton returned to the Steelers after being released in the offseason following one season with the Lions.
