NFL suspends Steelers’ Cameron Sutton for 8 games after domestic violence arrest

In early March, police in Florida issued an arrest warrant for Detroit Lions defensive back Cameron Sutton. They were unable to locate the NFL defensive back for weeks, but he eventually turned himself in to authorities.

Sutton was wanted on charges of domestic violence by strangulation stemming from an incident involving his girlfriend, with whom he has three children.

While searching for Sutton, the Lions released the veteran cornerback, whom they signed on a three-year deal prior to last season after he spent his first six seasons in Pittsburgh.

Due to his legal issues, the Steelers decided to bring Sutton back at a significantly lower cost. However, the team was aware that the NFL would likely impose disciplinary action against Sutton.

The league did just that on Monday, announcing an eight-game suspension for Sutton, citing violations of the NFL’s code of conduct. ESPN’s Adam Schefter was the first to report the news.

Schefter reported that Sutton’s suspension is unpaid and the cornerback does not intend to appeal. He will miss the first eight games of the 2024-25 NFL season.

The Tampa Bay Times After Sutton’s arrest, he received a copy of the affidavit, and the details of the incident do not paint a good picture of Sutton.

“Sutton and a woman got into an argument around 4:45 a.m. on March 7… During the argument, Sutton picked the woman up and slammed her against a wall, then bit her on the neck, leaving a bleeding abrasion the size of a quarter,” the Tampa Bay Times Report on the affidavit.

“Sutton then grabbed the woman by the face and neck and choked her, causing her to briefly lose consciousness. The altercation continued into the living room of the house, where Sutton grabbed the woman by her hair and punched her twice, causing a bump to form on the woman’s forehead.”

Sutton is eligible to return to action for the Steelers following their Week 8 Monday Night Football game against the New York Giants.

Pittsburgh has a bye in Week 9, meaning the earliest Sutton could play for the team is in Week 10, when Washington plays against the Commanders.
