Beryl Brings 90+ MPH Winds, 12+ Inches of Rain to Houston

While much of the Houston metro area saw less than a foot of rainfall, some isolated areas saw up to 15 inches of rain in the past 24 hours.

HOUSTON — As Tropical Storm Beryl continues to weaken along the coast, preliminary rainfall totals and official wind gust speeds are beginning to arrive in the Houston metro area.

While most of the region has received between 6 and 10 inches of rain in the past 24 hours, some communities have received more than a foot of rain since Beryl first made landfall as a Category 1 hurricane early Monday morning. It was later downgraded to a tropical storm after several hours over land.

The storm brought high winds, heavy rains and flooding to many areas of the city and left more than 2.5 million customers without power.

Now that Beryl is moving north, preliminary rainfall totals for the past 24 hours have started to come in.

  • Hillshire Village – 14.88″
  • Sugar Land – 13.32″
  • Place West U – 11.68″
  • First colony – 10.80″
  • Friends Wood – 10.20″
  • Mission curvature – 10.12″

Some locations saw sustained rainfall of more than an inch per hour for several hours Monday, according to the Harris County Flood Warning System, which shares rainfall totals and flood information for the region.

One spot near Dixie Farm Rd and Clear Creek even recorded 2.75 inches of rain in one hour.

These are preliminary totals only and will continue to be updated as Beryl leaves the Houston area.

Official wind gusts of over 80 mph were recorded in many locations across the region, including a recorded gust of over 90 mph in San Bernard.
