Braves shortstop Orlando Arcia has tooth abscess

Snitker couldn’t say whether Arcia would be in the lineup Wednesday. “We’ll see,” he said.

A week before that, Arcia had missed two games after leaving the field due to dizziness. He did not appear to be feeling well.

A dental abscess is a brutal stroke of luck for Arcia.

“He’d probably rather be sick than have something like this,” Snitker said Tuesday of Arcia’s tooth abscess.

The Braves discovered Arcia’s tooth Tuesday. Snitker said Arcia’s wife alerted the team.

“I didn’t ask if it bothered him (Monday) or anything like that,” Snitker said. “It could have and they got to a point where they had to do something.”

A dental abscess is a small bubble of pus that occurs due to a bacterial infection. Snitker didn’t go into much detail in Arcia, but typical symptoms of a dental abscess include a throbbing toothache, sensitivity to hot and cold, and pain or discomfort when chewing or biting. A dental abscess may cause fever or facial swelling.

In 285 at-bats this season, Arcia is hitting .211 with a .582 OPS. He has six home runs and 23 RBIs. He has played terrific defense, though.

When the Braves needed Short, he delivered. He entered Tuesday’s game going 8 for 59 but had five RBIs and 11 walks in 55 plate appearances.

In Tuesday’s loss to the Giants, Short went 0-for-2 with a strikeout. But in the fifth inning, he hit Atlanta’s first sacrifice bunt of the season.

Kranitz absent due to family problems

In the top of the third inning Tuesday, bullpen coach Erick Abreu — not pitching coach Rick Kranitz — visited Reynaldo López on the mound.

Kranitz was absent due to a family matter. Abreu took over mound visits Tuesday.

Laureano could be on injured reserve

Ramón Laureano has not played since June 26 due to back pain.

On Wednesday, Snitker said Laureano’s pain had moved from his back to his oblique area, which is not a good sign. The manager said Laureano could end up on injured reserve “in the future” if he doesn’t show improvement.

The Braves will have to manage Laureano’s situation day by day, as they did with Austin Riley, who was out for two weeks with intercostal inflammation.

Snitker on Harris: ‘I think he feels good’

Michael Harris II (torn hamstring) could start running by the end of the week?

Snitker said he had no expectations for Harris.

“I ran into him in the hallway a little while ago,” Snitker said. “I think he’s feeling good, so I have to think it’s something that’s going to happen here shortly.”

Lopez to resume with regular rest

After Tuesday’s loss, Reynaldo López said he would be back Sunday against the Phillies. If so, he would be resting for just the second time in 16 starts.

On Tuesday, Lopez allowed two runs in 4 1/3 innings.
