Voter Alert for Webster Township

The August 6 primary election is likely to be crucial for Webster Township voters.

Not only is there a competition for seats on the board of trustees and the position of supervisor, voters also have to vote on two tax proposals.

In the primaries, voters choose the Democratic and Republican candidates for the November election. In Webster, every seat is up for election.

Voters are asked not to elect more than four candidates for the Board of Trustees.

The Democratic candidates are Shelly Vrsek, Tarek Z. Kanaan, Brant Savander, Jeff Harms and Dan Munzel, while the Republican candidates are David D. Daily, Inshal Chenet, John M. Gills, John H. Westman and Richard Kleinschmidt.

For Township Supervisor, voters are asked not to elect more than one candidate.

The Democratic candidates are Peter T. Stevens and L. Michael DeAngelo and the Republican candidate is John V. Kingsley.

The two proposals up for vote concern roads and land protection.

Proposition A asks voters to approve the levy of 0.8225 per thousand to provide funding for the maintenance, reconstruction, repaving or preservation of roads in the municipality.

The ballot will read:

Should the limitation on the amount of taxes that may be levied each year for all purposes on real and tangible personal property in Webster Township, Michigan, be increased as provided in Section 6, Article IX of the Michigan Constitution, or should the levy of a tax not to exceed 0.8225 mills ($0.8225 per $1,000 of state taxable value) be authorized for a period of ten (10) years beginning with the tax levy on December 1, 2024 (which will generate estimated revenues of $470,150.51 in the first year) for road improvements and maintenance of roads in Webster Township?

Proposal B concerns the renewal of the millage to preserve farmland and open space.

The ballot paper will read:

Shall the previously enacted increase in the tax limitation under Article IX, Section 6 of the Constitution of the State of Michigan in Webster Township of 0.5 mills ($0.50 per $1,000 of taxable value), reduced to 0.4735 mills ($0.47 per $1,000 of taxable value) by the required millage withdrawals, be renewed to ($0.4735 per $1,000 of taxable value) and levied for ten (10) years, from 2025 to 2034, inclusive, for the purpose of preserving farmland and open space in Webster Township, raising an estimated $270,388.00 in 2025, the first year of levy?
