Emergency incident causes delays at Paddington Airport for Elizabeth Line, Heathrow Express and Glastonbury fans

Music fans travelling to the Glastonbury Festival by train face hours of delays following an accident on the line in west London.

There were long delays and cancellations on the Elizabeth Line, Great Western Railway (GWR) and Heathrow Express after all lines between London Paddington and Heathrow Airport and to Reading were closed.

GWR said all tracks in West Ealing were closed on Thursday morning as “emergency services dealt with an incident near the railway line”.

The lines have now reopened, but National Rail has warned that waiting times of up to 60 minutes could still occur until 1pm.

Transport for London had previously warned passengers that there would be no services between Paddington and Reading “while emergency services attend to an accident on the track”.

The incident is affecting services to and from London Paddington, which is en route to Castle Cary, the closest station to the Glastonbury Festival.

At London Paddington, several trains were cancelled, including the 8.38am departure from the capital to Castle Cary – the closest station to Glastonbury Festival. Dozens of people sat on the floor in Paddington near the boarding area for trains to Castle Cary.

Hannah Yates, 28, from north London, who had booked a train with four friends, told PA: “I went to (a member of staff) and he told me there had been a death on the line and to wait 45 minutes, so we’re waiting for the next announcement.”

“It’s frustrating, I would say.

“It’s already been a pretty stressful day, and this is just what’s coming.”

Another festival-goer, who gave his name as Zac, said: “We took the Elizabeth Line here and they had cancelled the Elizabeth Line to Heathrow, so we had a suspicion.”

“We’re still looking forward to it, a few hours won’t make any difference to the whole weekend.”

Passengers are advised that disruptions may occur until 1 p.m.
