Isolated storms continue this morning with heavy downpours and frequent lightning. A Severe Storm Warning is in effect for the western/southwestern third of our observation area until 9 a.m. Damaging straight-line winds are possible in this observation area where strong “storm fuel” remains. Wind gusts in excess of 60 MPH are possible. Scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible in the St. Louis metropolitan area, but severe weather is less likely.

Today & Thursday: The threat of severe storms will end during the morning as rain and storms clear by midday and early afternoon. While it won’t be nearly as hot as Tuesday afternoon’s 102°F, humidity will remain noticeable and it will feel muggy. That changes on Thursday as drier air arrives and humidity levels drop. Thursday will likely be the best day of the week with lower humidity, mostly sunny skies and near-normal temperatures (highs around 80°F).

Friday and this weekend: Temperatures will rise again on Friday and Saturday, but the heat doesn’t look to be as intense as Tuesday. Humidity will increase, however. There is also some chance of rain and storms during this period, with the best chances for showers and storms on Saturday, but the exact timing and impact is still uncertain. We will continue to update these rain chances as the weekend approaches.

Next week: As the Fourth of July approaches, there are early signs that the heat will return to our area as early as Tuesday of next week. Once it arrives, it is likely that this heat will blanket the area until Independence Day.
