Jet ski operator pronounced dead after capsizing in Lake Ontario

A jet ski rider was pronounced dead Saturday night after the boat capsized in Lake Ontario, about three-quarters of a mile west of Irondequoit Bay.

According to the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office, two people were on the watercraft when it capsized just before 7:18 p.m. Firefighters, police and Coast Guard responded to a report of a capsized boat and found the jet ski with a male skier on board. He was recovered from the water by a West Webster Fire Department boat and taken to Strong Memorial Hospital; his injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Two people were reported to be on the jet ski, so the sheriff’s marine unit, West Webster Fire Department, U.S. Coast Guard, Rochester Fire Department marine unit and NYSP aviation unit continued the search. The Coast Guard found the jet skier in the lake at about 8:10 p.m. and brought her to shore. The Irondequoit ambulance took her to Strong Memorial Hospital in critical condition. She was later pronounced dead.

The sheriff’s office is continuing its investigation and is asking anyone with information to call 911. Theu will not release the jet ski rider’s name until her family is notified.
