Head-on collision between semi-trailer and delivery truck reported in West Des Moines

Seven children and two adults were taken to hospitals in central Iowa after a daycare van collided head-on with a semi-truck in West Des Moines. Adam Porath said the daycare van was traveling north on South 88th. “Apparently the driver was distracted and veered into the path of the semi-truck” traveling south, “and a head-on collision occurred,” Porath said. “The semi-truck tried to swerve, so I think that contributed a little to this accident — to its severity.” Porath said investigators don’t yet know how or why the van’s driver became distracted, but said “the cell phone could not be considered a factor.” Seven of the 10 children in the van were taken to local hospitals, as were the two drivers. Seven children and two adults were taken to hospitals in central Iowa after a daycare center’s delivery truck collided head-on with a semi-trailer truck in West Des Moines.

Shortly before 2 p.m., first responders were called to the scene of the accident on South 88th Street between Cody Drive and EP True Parkway.

West Des Moines police Sergeant Adam Porath said the daycare’s van was traveling north on South 88th.

“Apparently the driver was distracted and entered the path of the semi-trailer truck,” which was traveling south, “and a head-on collision occurred,” Porath said.

“The tractor-trailer was trying to take evasive action, so I think that contributed a little to this accident – to its severity.”

Porath said investigators do not yet know how or why the van driver was distracted, but said, “A cell phone cannot be considered a cause.”

Seven of the ten children in the van and the two drivers were taken to local hospitals. Officials believe that none of the injuries are life-threatening.

Michele Reece of Waukee said she was out shopping when she discovered the accident. She called it a “really scary, terrifying incident” after caring for several children who were in the van at the time of the accident.

“If it were my granddaughters, I would want someone to pull over and help,” Reece said.

“I just pray that all the children are OK. … It’s a huge trauma for all of them.”
