The University of Houston says two students were arrested following an apparent pro-Palestinian encampment by a group of about 60 people.

HOUSTON, Texas (KTRK) — The University of Houston said two students were arrested after an apparent pro-Palestinian encampment was removed from campus Wednesday morning.

According to the university, the encampment was set up by approximately 60 people on Butler Plaza overnight.

“Tents and encampments are not permitted on campus per state law,” the school said in part.

Officers from the University of Houston Police Department arrived at the encampment around 7 a.m. and began informing students that they were not allowed to camp.

Police then ordered students to disperse every 15 minutes, the school said.

UHPD cleared the encampment shortly after 9 a.m. and two students were arrested. The school said it took officers about 20 minutes to dismantle the camp.

One student was reportedly arrested for failing to identify himself, and another for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest.

UH officials said the group was allowed to continue its protest in accordance with university policies.

“We support the constitutional rights to free speech and peaceful assembly and continue to encourage groups to engage in expressive activities safely, consistent with university policies and laws of the State, and with respect for the rights of others with divergent opinions,” the school’s statement said.

A UH organizer told ABC13 they planned to head to the Harris County Joint Processing Center since two of the dozens of protesters had been arrested.

Hours later, a protest unfolded outside the Harris County Joint Processing Center, forcing authorities to close a half-mile stretch of a street in downtown Houston.
