Chennai: In another attack on stray cattle, this time in Thiruvottiyura untied buffalo attacked Woman pedestrianthrew her into the air on Sunday and dragged her for about 50 metres after her sari got caught in its horn. At least two bystanders who tried to rescue the woman were also injured while the animal ran around damaging parked two-wheelers.
A CCTV clip of the attack went viral on social media, sparking outrage at the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) and its inaction in controlling stray cattle.On Monday, GCC officials seized the buffalo. The injured woman, Madhumathi, 33, a resident of Hamsa Thottam Second Street in Thiruvottiyur, was on her way to visit a relative when the buffalo attacked her, according to police.
Video footage shows that the woman, who was crossing the road, panicked and stood motionless as the animal attacked her. As she fell, it hit her again. This time her sari got caught in the animal’s horn. As she screamed for help, onlookers came to her aid and chased the buffalo away. The woman suffered severe bruises and a broken leg.
According to police, two other people were injured while trying to rescue Madhumathi. Among them was Chandrasekar, who runs an ironing business in the neighbourhood. More than 10 parked bicycles were damaged in the scuffle.
Madhumathi and Chandrasekar were admitted to a private hospital while another injured person was treated as an outpatient. Police have registered a case.
GCC Commissioner J Radhakrishnan said, “Nobody has come forward to claim ownership of the buffalo. Once the owner is identified, GCC will file a complaint against the person.”
