Father of former Giants RB Saquon Barkley arrested during traffic stop in New York

Alibay Barkley, the father of former Giants running back Saquon Barkley, was arrested on Wednesday. The charge: Carrying a firearm during a traffic stop in the Bronx, New York.

6abc Action News in Philadelphia reported that Barley, 55, whose son spent the first six years of his NFL career with the Giants before signing as a free agent with the Philadelphia Eagles this season, was driving a Corvette when he was stopped at the corner of East 140th Street and Third Avenue.

The New York Post reported that the stop was made because the Corvette that Barkley was driving hidden license plates.

When the police wanted to speak to Barkley, found the pink gun loaded. A further investigation also found that the The Corvette that Barkley was driving was not registered.

He told police that the gun belonged to his wife and that they kept it for safety reasons since their son was a prominent figure and frequently visited the Bronx, where they still had family and friends. Barkley explained that his son had purchased the car.

According to WABC-TV in New York, which cited the police report on the arrest, the elder Barkley does not have a license to carry a firearm in New York.

Alibay Barkley, who lives in Pennsylvania, has posted bail of $5,000. His court date is June 11. He will face charges including illegal possession of weapons and possession of ammunition.
