Dalit woman: Soldier and friend sentenced to life imprisonment for raping Dalit woman in Pauri | News from Dehradun

Dehradun: A district court in Pauri Garhwal has sentenced two men, including an army personnel, to life imprisonment for raping a 20-year-old Dalit woman from her village on March 27, 2021. District and Sessions Judge Ajay Chaudhary pronounced the verdict against the soldier, posted with the 6 Garhwal Rifles in Pithoragarh, and his friend, who works with a private firm. The court also imposed a fine of Rs 32,000 on each of the convicts and ordered that a total compensation of Rs 64,000 be paid to the survivor from the penalty. Both the convicts claimed that they were falsely accused after they found the woman with another man in a compromising situation in a forest area. However, the court noted that they had fled the village on the evening of the incident, which is significant under the Indian Evidence Act and indicates their guilty conduct. In her statement, the survivor reported that she was on her way home from the bank when the two men on a motorcycle stopped her, took her to a remote area, offered her Rs 10,000 each for sexual favours and assaulted her when she refused. “I fell unconscious after they hit me. When I regained consciousness, I realised that they had physically abused me,” she testified. Prosecution lawyer Pradeep Kumar Bhatt said the woman managed to escape, came out on the road and stopped a vehicle. The driver helped her reach her village where she called her father to report the assault. The survivor’s family reported the incident to the village patwari and took her to the hospital. Medical examination confirmed signs of physical abuse, corroborating her statement.
