Death of inmate at East Coast detention facility ruled a homicide; Maryland State Police investigate – Baltimore Sun

Maryland State Police are investigating the death of an inmate at the Eastern Correctional Institution in Somerset County.

Eugene Stanford, 49, originally from Trappe, Maryland, was killed around 3:30 p.m. Friday while serving his sentence at the facility, police said in a news release. The Eastern Correctional Institution is a medium-security facility in Westover on the lower Eastern Shore.

Stanford’s autopsy revealed that a crime had occurred, which is why his death was ruled a homicide by the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner, the press release said.

One inmate has been identified as a suspect but has not yet been charged. The suspect will not be identified until charges are filed.
