Second Orange MP arrested for timesheets

A longtime Orange County deputy was arrested Wednesday after being accused of falsifying his timesheets, the second charge of the crime in two weeks.

Sergeant Jeffrey Bogen is the last of half a dozen members of the sheriff’s office who will face criminal charges in 2024.

Bogen, who was hired in October 2001, is charged with grand theft of at least $10,000 in an attempt to defraud taxpayers of money for hours he did not work, the sheriff’s office said Thursday.

Records detailing the charges against Bogen were not immediately available, but his arrest followed that of Cpl. Oxilise Jeannot on May 16. Jeannot was also charged with grand theft after allegedly documenting more than $3,200 in unworked on- and off-duty hours over four months.

Both deputies have been relieved of duty while their legal proceedings continue, the sheriff’s office said. After that, the agency intends to launch an internal investigation.

“Orange County Sheriff’s Office deputies are held to the highest ethical standards and we will not tolerate anyone breaking the law within our ranks,” Sheriff John Mina said in a statement.

Before Bogen, the most recent arrest was on May 17 of Cpl. James Montiel, who escaped prosecution for the 2020 killing of Salaythis Melvin at the Florida Mall. He is charged with 10 counts of possession of child sexual abuse material in Seminole County, including videos involving a minor he knew but whose identity was not known in court records.

On Tuesday, a judge denied a request to revoke Montiel’s $100,000 bail after he was caught making contact with the victim, ordering him to stay 500 feet away from her.

On May 9, Cpl. Patricio Goris was charged with domestic violence in Volusia County after allegedly forcing him into his ex-wife’s home in violation of their divorce agreement. The case has since been dismissed, according to court records.

Last month, Deputy Francisco Estrella was accused of using a law enforcement database to gather information on a Seminole County detective who was working on a car theft and killing of a woman. He has pleaded not guilty.

In January, Volusia officers arrested Deputy Tristan Chattic, who was charged with child abuse after he punched and strangled his wife’s 13-year-old daughter before hitting her with his belt. He told investigators he committed insubordination. The case is ongoing.
