KC Pet Project suspends search for missing local alligator

KANSAS CITY, Missouri (KCTV) – The local search for a missing alligator in Kansas City has been called off.

KC Pet Project announced Tuesday that its crews are suspending their on-site search for a 12-inch-long alligator that went missing from Lakeview Middle School on Thursday, May 23.

The alligator escaped from Thorni Ridge Exotics’ mobile petting zoo, which visited the school in the Park Hill School District.

“We will continue to patrol the area around the middle school. If you have any information or possible sightings, please call us at 816-683-1373,” KC Pet Project said in a Facebook post.

On Friday, KC Pet Project said the Park Hill School District has not received city approval to host the traveling zoo, meaning it will likely face a fine.

“The main reason we are concerned about these permits is to ensure that all necessary protocols are followed and public safety is ensured,” said Tori Fugate, chief communications officer for the KC Pet Project. “We plan to issue citations in this case.”

The alligator’s mouth had been taped shut at the school and there are fears that he will not be able to eat or drink, putting his life in danger.

KC Pet Project said that despite the suspension of the search on site, teams will respond to any possible sightings or reports from the public.
