Apartment fire in Brooklyn: Fire department investigates fire as possible murder case in Bedford Stuyvesant

BEDFORD STUYVESANT, Brooklyn (WABC) – New York City FDNY police officials believe a fire in Brooklyn that killed one person may have been deliberately set.

Police arrived at the scene around 11:15 p.m. Friday after smoke was seen coming from an apartment at 371 Monroe Street.

According to officials, the fire broke out in a ground-floor apartment. Firefighters arrived on the scene to help extinguish the fire.

When officers arrived, they found a 70-year-old man unconscious and unresponsive in his bedroom, where he was pronounced dead.

A 65-year-old woman is in stable condition after first responders took her to Woodhull Medical Center for smoke inhalation.

“I smelled the smoke and then my son ran to everyone’s door and banged on it to tell them to get out of the smoke and then we all ran out,” a neighbor said.

One person is in custody in connection with the incident and investigations are ongoing.
