Detectives from the 114th Precinct are investigating a bizarre attack in broad daylight near the Woodside Houses NYCHA complex Wednesday afternoon.

A 37-year-old man began a physical altercation with a couple and was repeatedly punched and stabbed when the man and woman fought back.

The instigator approached the couple as they were walking a dog on Newtown Road at 49th Street near the Broadway intersection shortly before 3 p.m. He hit the man from behind while he was moving around with the help of a scooter, leaving him with an apparent injury to his right foot; The woman walking next to him immediately retaliated while still holding onto the dog’s leash.

According to an NYPD spokeswoman, the man on the scooter produced a sharp object and stabbed his attacker multiple times in the head, neck, back and lower torso. She couldn’t say what triggered the first attack.

The couple and dog fled the scene and walked east on Broadway toward Northern Boulevard.

EMS responded to the scene and quickly transported the injured man to Elmhurst Hospital, where he was in stable condition. Investigators are working to locate the couple. There have been no arrests and the assault investigation is ongoing.
