Video shows attack on Beech Grove High School students in classroom – Indianapolis News | Indiana Weather | Indiana Traffic

BEECH GROVE, Ind. (WISH) – It was the third day of school and second-grader Justin Stewart was dragged into a closet at Beech Grove High School by two classmates and beaten.

The boy’s mother, Debbi Khanthamany, said she was so angry when she saw a video of the incident that she began to shake. She said the school never informed her about the fight. Instead, she learned about it from other parents and was the one who had to contact the school.

Khanthamany said the fight took place on Friday.

In the video, two boys are seen attacking 15-year-old Stewart, one of whom kicks him while he is on the ground. A third student, a football teammate of Stewart’s, tried to intervene and offered her son the only protection he could get during the ordeal, Khanthamany said.

“The fact that my baby was not protected … I felt like someone was protecting him. Even in the video, you don’t hear the teacher say anything,” she said.

According to Khanthamany, Stewart claimed the teacher was present in the classroom but did nothing while another student filmed the fight.

She says the two boys who attacked her son were not part of the class; they entered the room, dragged Stewart into a closet and continued the attack. One of the attackers was reportedly older.

Khanthamany said her son burst into tears when she found him.

“As soon as I walked into the school, I said, ‘Take me to him.’ They took me to a conference room and had to pull out the keys to unlock a door. He was sitting there all alone,” she said.

Although she was clearly the victim, Khanthamany said her son’s teacher warned him for disciplinary action. She claims his only offense was leaving the classroom to get help, as he was not allowed to use his cellphone to call his mother.

“In the video you can see him being punched and kicked in the back of the head. They shouldn’t have locked him up alone,” Khanthamany said. Stewart’s left eye swelled up and doctors diagnosed him with a mild concussion.

Mitzi Garman, a representative of Beech Grove City Schools, would not confirm whether any disciplinary action was taken against Stewart or his attackers. She said, “It would be inappropriate to discuss the details of individual students publicly.” She added, “I can confirm that our administrative team promptly initiated the investigation and communications were made in accordance with policy.”

Khanthamany said her son is embarrassed by the incident, but she wants to talk about it to prevent it from happening to others. She is also considering filing a complaint.
