43-year-old man arrested for attempted murder of HPD officer

Honolulu Police today arrested a 43-year-old man on suspicion of attempted first-degree murder for allegedly injuring an arresting police officer who was investigating a report of a car theft.

Police also arrested the man on suspicion of operating a motor vehicle without authorization and first-degree intentional damage to property.

An HPD report said police encountered the suspect around 5:15 a.m. on Vancouver Drive in the Manoa neighborhood in a vehicle that had been reported stolen on July 12. The report said the man ignored officers’ commands, “accelerated, sideswiped a parked vehicle, drove through a residential gate and came to a stop after entering a closed garage.”

One officer was injured in the incident and taken to a nearby hospital in good condition, the summary said. HPD said the suspect, who sustained injuries in the collision, was taken to the hospital where he was treated and released to remain in police custody.

HPD will file charges through the district attorney’s office, the highlight said.
