Police close Outer Ring Road and issue fines to several drivers for recording accidents while driving

The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary has ticketed several onlookers with cell phones in their hands after an accident closed both sides of the Outer Ring Road in St. John’s on Thursday morning.

According to police, several drivers drove past the accident scene with their mobile phones out and took photos and videos of the accident site.

“Please pass the accident site carefully on foot together with the emergency services,” says a police post on social media.

The accident occurred at 8:30 a.m. near the Team Gushue exit on the outer ring road. Traffic quickly backed up in both directions of the divided highway, clogging all four lanes for long stretches.

Police decided to close the highway at around 9 a.m. Further updates are expected throughout the morning.
