Targeted shooting incident in downtown Hagerstown under investigation

Authorities in Hagerstown are currently investigating a shooting that occurred Thursday near the intersection of East Washington Street and Cannon Avenue. The incident, which occurred around 12:53 p.m., prompted a massive police response and street closures in the downtown area.

According to the Hagerstown Police Department (HPD), it was a targeted shooting. Police were alerted to the situation at around 2:37 p.m. via their Facebook page, reporting a “shooting incident” in the 200 block of East Washington Street.

In response to the incident, HPD has issued a call for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. Tips are being accepted at [email protected] to assist with the ongoing investigation.

Eyewitness Joshua Baker, who lives near the corner of Washington and Mulberry streets, reported hearing several gunshots and a speeding vehicle shortly before 1 p.m. Baker’s girlfriend Monica Rouse noted that an ambulance drove away from the scene with its blue lights on, underscoring the seriousness of the incident.

According to Baker, the area, which is known for its frequent car accidents, was unusually quiet before the shooting. After the incident, several streets, including North Potomac Street and Cannon Avenue, were closed to facilitate the police investigation, causing residents and passersby to gather around the cordoned-off area.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office also responded and located vehicles at the scene. A sheriff’s office spokesperson referred all inquiries to Hagerstown police.

The investigation is ongoing and police have expanded their search area to include nearby East Franklin Street. Authorities continue to assess the situation and have not released any further details about the shooting or possible suspects.
