Man arrested in Tucumcari for allegedly shooting at a car with children and adults inside

TUCUMCARI, NM (KRQE) – Tucumcari police are investigating after an SUV with adults and children inside was shot at Thursday.

Police say 27-year-old Frankie Martinez fired shots at the gray SUV, which was traveling north on Jackson Street. Two adults and three children were inside the vehicle, and one of the passengers had superficial injuries from broken glass.

Martinez then reportedly barricaded himself in his home with his girlfriend and two children. The NMSP took over the investigation and helped get Martinez’s girlfriend and two children safely out of the home before Martinez surrendered.

Officers seized two firearms, including a pistol with a 30-round magazine, a shotgun and a large amount of ammunition. Sixteen empty 9mm cartridge cases were found from the porch to the street. About five grams of methamphetamine were also seized, police said.

Martinez was booked into the Quay County Detention Center and faces several charges, including five counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, one count of shooting at or from a moving vehicle and one count of possession of methamphetamine.
