Air Quality Warning for Central Pennsylvania on Tuesday

An air quality warning has been issued for Dauphin, Lebanon, Cumberland, York and Lancaster counties and is in effect until midnight Tuesday.

“The Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection issued an ORANGE air quality alert for the Susquehanna Valley on Monday. An ORANGE air quality alert means air pollution levels in the area may become unhealthy for sensitive groups. Sensitive groups include children, people with asthma, heart disease or other lung conditions, and the elderly. The impacts of air pollution can be minimized by avoiding strenuous outdoor activity or physical exercise,” the National Weather Service said.

Air quality warnings: NWS prescribes safety measures

When an air quality warning is in place, it is important to follow the weather service’s instructions. Here are some simple tips from the weather service to protect your well-being:

Prioritize staying indoors:

If possible, stay indoors, especially if you suffer from respiratory problems or other health problems or if you belong to the group of elderly or children.

Limiting external radiation:

If you can’t avoid going outside, limit your outdoor activities to what is essential. The key is to reduce the time you spend outside.

Reducing environmental pollution:

Be cautious about activities that worsen pollution, such as driving, using gasoline-powered lawn mowers, or using other motorized vehicles. Minimize their use during air quality alerts.

No open fire:

Do not light fires using debris or other materials during an air quality alert. Such practices only contribute to increased air pollution.

Stay well informed:

Stay informed by tuning into NOAA Weather Radio or your favorite weather news station. Staying informed will help you make informed decisions about outdoor activities when air quality alerts are in place.

Prioritize respiratory health:

If you have respiratory problems or health issues, be especially careful. In these circumstances, you are more vulnerable to the negative effects of poor air quality.

Following the weather service’s recommendations will increase your safety during air quality alerts and minimize your exposure to potentially harmful pollutants. Stay alert, protect yourself, and make your health your top priority.
