Suspension of opposition leader Ambadas Danve shortened | Mumbai News

MUMBAI: The state Legislative Council on Thursday passed a resolution to reduce the suspension of Ambadas Danve, member of the House of Representatives and leader of the opposition from the Shiv Sena (UBT), from 5 days to 3 days. Danve can attend the monsoon session of the state Legislative Council from Friday till the end of the session on July 12. The reduction in the suspension comes after Danve expressed regret and apologised in a letter to Deputy Chairman Neelam Gorhe. Danve had changed his social media bio to ‘suspended LoP’. Danve said the reduction in the suspension was too little, too late.

The motion to reduce Danve’s suspension was moved by Parliament Minister Chandrakant Patil and then put to vote by Gorhe. “LoP Danve has written a letter expressing regret. A decision was taken to suspend him for 5 days and he was also barred from entering Parliament. Now, it has been decided to reduce his suspension from 5 days to 3 days on the basis of his letter expressing regret,” Patil said in his motion.

“This is not a very big decision. The government has not shown a big heart or generosity. The weekend is coming and the session will not be held then. Since they were facing severe criticism, they have taken this decision. I sent a letter on Wednesday morning so that they could have taken a decision on Wednesday itself. It is too late to decide now. Since they have taken a unilateral decision, they should have reconsidered it earlier. The deputy chairman has decided to suspend me under pressure,” Danve said.

“I have worked on my own initiative. My party leader has also expressed his regret. But they do not take it into account. I will return to the concerns of the farmers, the youth and the common people,” said Danve.

The Legislative Council had passed a resolution to suspend Danve for five days for making abusive remarks and full of foul language and insults against BJP MP Prasad Lad on Monday. Uddhav has also apologised to the mothers and sisters of the state on Danve’s behalf but said Danve’s suspension was one-sided and Danve was not given a chance to present his case. Uddhav said this was against democratic principles. Uddhav also said that Congress MP Rahul Gandhi’s statement in the Lok Sabha that the BJP does not represent all Hindus was true and that Rahul had not insulted Hindutva. The Legislative Council was adjourned twice on Tuesday morning as BJP MPs said they would not allow the sessions to continue unless action was taken against Danve.

On Monday, the council witnessed such a clash between the government and opposition benches that their members hurled danve at each other and took the lead in doing so. The incident came when both sides were on a collision course over Rahul Gandhi’s association of Hindus with violence and social hatred. BJP parliamentary leader Prasad Lad and other members like Pravin Darekar, Pravin Datke, Shrikant Bharatiya and Ram Kadam announced a boycott of the proceedings until the chairman moved a motion on his own initiative condemning Gandhi.

When Lad pointed his finger at Danve, who denounced the boycott of the ruling ranks by saying that Gandhi’s statement had no bearing on the proceedings of Parliament, the latter became angry and asked Lad to stop pointing his finger at him and instead point at the Speaker. Enraged, Danve hurled abuse which surprised the entire Council.
