Car crash at Corcoran Preschool leads to murder investigation, police say

CORCORAN, Calif. (KFSN) – A flickering candle and flowers stand under the hot Central Valley sun in memory of the 40-year-old man who was shot and killed Tuesday night.

“Any time we have a case like this, a homicide, it’s hard on the entire department, the community and of course those most affected, the family and friends,” said Corcoran Police Chief Margarita Ochoa.

Officers were called to the area of Dairy Avenue and Hanna Avenue for a traffic accident. There were reports of a man driving into this preschool. The video shows the tire tracks in the grass and the broken fence.

Police Chief Ochoa said that when police began life-saving measures, they quickly realized that this was more than a car accident.

“Then they realized it was possibly a gunshot and shortly thereafter his death was confirmed,” said Police Chief Ochoa.

Chief Ochoa adds that this is the second murder case reported to police this year.

Action News spoke to people in the area who did not want to appear on camera for privacy reasons. One man who has lived in Corcoran his entire life says hearing gunshots has become a common occurrence.

As detectives continue to interview witnesses and try to determine the cause of the shooting, Police Chief Ochoa wants to remind the public of the importance of reporting crime in the city.

“I think that’s the hardest part. We haven’t received any 911 calls about gunshots, and that makes it a little more difficult when you’re rushing to a traffic accident with injuries and you know something else happened,” said Police Chief Ochoa.

Authorities have not yet released the victim’s name and are still working to identify the shooter. Anyone with information is asked to call police and remain anonymous.
