A 77-year-old Massachusetts man suffered a spinal injury and was taken to the hospital after the machine he was working on “jerked violently,” Cohasset police said.

The man was operating an excavator with a hammer drill that was breaking up large rocks when he slipped off one of the rocks on Thursday, police said in a Facebook post. The machine was then “shaken violently” and “thrown to the ground,” police said.

At around 11 a.m., paramedics from the Cohasset Fire Department were able to stabilize the man and free him from the driver’s seat. He was then taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Police released photos showing the man being rescued from the excavator and placed on a spinal stretcher.

Detectives from the Cohasset Police Department and the U.S. Federal Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) are investigating the incident.
