3 motorcyclists killed, 5 injured in fiery car crash on Freeway 5 in Camp Pendleton

CAMP PENDLETON, CA (June 28, 2024) – Three motorcyclists died in a serious multi-car crash on Freeway 5 near Las Pulgas Road.

According to the California Highway Patrol, the fatal motorcycle crash occurred around 3:00 a.m. Thursday. For an unknown reason, a Jeep driver struck the left side guardrail, rejoined the highway and stopped. An oncoming Mercedes-Benz van then rammed the broken-down Jeep before a group of four motorcyclists riding in tandem collided with the wreckage.

Shortly thereafter, paramedics arrived at the scene and took two people in the Jeep to Scripps La Jolla Hospital for treatment of their life-threatening injuries. Paramedics also took the Mercedes-Benz driver and a passenger to the hospital with moderate injuries.

Tragically, three motorcyclists were killed, including two sailors stationed in the San Diego area.

Authorities have not disclosed their identities.

Due to the incident, police have closed the southbound lanes and Highway 76 to investigate. The actual cause of the accident has not yet been determined, but witnesses who can help can call the CHP.

Our deepest condolences go out to the families and friends of the victims.
